Eugenio López
Latin American Patron Award 2023
Eugenio López is one of Latin America’s greatest collectors and patrons. In 2001, he created the Jumex Contemporary Art Foundation to foster the production, discussion and knowledge of contemporary art. This is achieved through the Jumex Collection, the Foundation’s art collection, and the Jumex Museum which, after opening in 2013, has become a leading site for exhibiting contemporary art in Mexico.
Over the last two decades, the Foundation has awarded hundreds of grants and sponsorships for the production of contemporary art, to undertake independent projects, curatorial and artistic research, as well as to create publications focused on contemporary art.
Eugenio López is a member of the Board of Trustees of the New Museum for Contemporary Art in New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) of Los Angeles, California. Thanks to his interest in contemporary Latin American art, the JUMEX FUND was created at MOCA; it focuses especially on the acquisition of this type of art. He also made a major financial contribution to building the new building of the New Museum in New York City and, as an expression of their gratitude, the galleries on the second floor of the Museum bear his name. He has sponsored exhibitions and publications at the MoMA in New York and the LACMA in Los Angeles.
The Jumex Collection has more than 3,300 works by Mexican and international artists, such as John Baldessari, Abraham Cruz Villegas, Minerva Cuevas, Jose Dávila, Jenny Holzer, Donald Judd, Jeff Koons, Jannis Kounellis, Gabriel Kuri, Louise Lawler, Gonzalo Lebrija, Jorge Mendez Blake, Manuel Millares, Gabriel Orozco, Tania Pérez Córdoba, Ed Ruscha, Sofía Táboas, Antoni Tàpies, Cy Twombly, Dahn Vo, among many others.
