President of the Board of the Hispanic Society of America, a public educational institution that has objects of artistic, historical and literary value with the aim of contributing to the promotion of the study of languages, literature and Spanish and Portuguese history.
These past years, he has managed to raise the museum’s profile with initiatives with as letting 200 artworks to the Prado Museum for the exhibition “Treasures of the Hispanic Society of America” which increased greatly the institution’s visibility and has become one of the most acclaimed exhibitions.
He is Director Emeritus of The Metropolitan Museum of Art where he served as Director of the Museum for 31 years, the longest serving Director in the history of the Metropolitan Museum.
Patron of Honour of the National Prado Museum and member of the Board of the Musée D’Orsay, he has received numerous awards such as the United States National Medal of the Arts or the Order of Isabel la Católica, among others.
